If Selim still swiftly conquers the Mamluks and Suleiman comes to power like OTL, does he push even further into Europe with Rome as a staging point or does defending it bog him down? What do Spain, France, the HRE and Hungary do in this alternate 16th century? So, so many questions. In my opinion, it would change basically everything going forward, but how exactly is completely up in the air.

I am 100% certain there are more people in present post-war governments across the West that have read and been influenced by Karl Popper's Open Society than they have works like The Republic or The Laws from Plato. Which btw, while Popper preferred Aristotle he thought that Aristotle too, was an enemy of the Open Society for his beliefs in teleology and natural hierarchy. Indeed Aristotle actually makes far more extensive arguments in favor of slavery being natural than Plato did, you don't have to read Politics too long before Aristotle begins discussing natural slaves. Not to mention if you read The Republic, Plato does care about the individual desires of the citizen, that's the whole point, that the rulers serve the common good and benefit those ruled, one of the chief concerns of The Republic is justice. Similarly in the Laws, Plato does emphasizes liberty, allows for private property, doesn't simply shill for Sparta but also engages in critique of the Spartan (and Cretan) system, and does ultimately advocate for a kind of mixed constitutionalism. Plato is also a true believer in class, so he cannot in any sense be anachronistically considered the origins of leftism or the source of our modern ills, class politics arguably doesn't exist anymore (income is not the same as rank) and Plato has no intent in moving towards a classless society. This kind of over-reliance on Popper, a man who was looking for Hitler at every corner, and boiling everything down to Plato vs. Aristotle is quite simplistic and confused IMO when both men would likely be appalled by our mass democratic states.
